Playing it safe

Go! Fight! Win! With the fall school sports season well underway, the last thing you want is for your child to experience an injury. But between organizing schedules and enjoying the excitement of the competition, it can be easy to lose sight of proper preparation techniques to prevent injuries. That’s why Rehab Associates of Central Virginia has just the program to help kids and teens play it safe: our Sports Performance Program. In just 10 minutes, we can determine if your child is at risk for developing an injury. And best of all – the initial assessment is free!

The highlight of our Sports Performance Program is an assessment tool called the Functional Movement Screen. This consistent and reliable testing method is used to identify weaknesses and muscle imbalances that are present during movements commonly performed when participating in sports competition – before they hamper sports performance or cause full-fledged injuries.

What to expect

In the 10 minutes it takes to complete the Functional Movement Screen, we will assess these extreme functional patterns:

  • Function squatting
  • Hurdle stepping
  • Inline lunging
  • Shoulder mobility
  • Trunk stability
  • Rotary stability
  • Active straight leg raise

After the assessment, we’ll calculate a score that represents the athlete’s injury risk level. If the score does indicate an injury risk, just schedule an appointment to have your child fully evaluated by a physical therapist. They will address the impairments identified and develop a plan aimed at improving the assessment score and reducing any risk for injury.

If you would like for your student athlete or your athletic team to take advantage of our free Functional Movement Screen, please contact Dr. Catherine Beuerle, PT, DPT at our Bedford office (540-586-1138 or by e-mail at *protected email* or contact Dr. Jamie Garza at our Monelison office (434-845-5641 or by e-mail at *protected email*).

By the way, you don’t have to be a student athlete to take advantage of our free assessment. Whether you are a young amateur athlete, high school athlete, college athlete, professional athlete, “weekend warrior”, or if you perform heavy manual labor, or are just looking to start exercising on a regular basis, contact us to find out if you are at risk for a potential injury.
