Dry Needling:
A New Weapon to Fight Pain

“Dry needling is a skilled intervention that uses a thin filiform needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofacial trigger points, muscular, and connective tissues for the management of neuromusculoskeletal pain and movement impairments. Dry needling (DN) is a technique used to treat… and reduce or restore impairments of the body structure and function leading to improved activity and participation.” (American Physical Therapy Association 2013)

Dry needling is an adjunct treatment used by selected physical therapists to treat some of the underlying causes of pain. This treatment is not acupuncture. Modern dry needling is based on Western neuroanatomy and modern scientific study of the muscles and nervous system. This modality can only be done by trained clinicians.

Jason B. Gulstrom, Site Director, Wards Road

Jason B. Gulstrom, PT, DPT, MBA

Site Director, Wards Road
Dry Needling & Vestibular Certified (AIB).

Jason Gulstrom is a physical therapist in our Ward’s Road office. Jason, the youngest of seven children, was raised in Maine and graduated with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and a Master's in Business Administration from Husson University (Bangor, Maine). He enjoys playing basketball, reading, and spending time outdoors.

Jason got into physical therapy due to his mother’s experiences with physical therapy. When asked what his desire is for each patient's experience during physical therapy, Jason stated, “I want each of my patients to not only want to come to therapy but to have such a positive experience that they want their mother to come.”

One of Jason’s former patients had this to say about the time that she and her husband spent in therapy, “My husband and I went into physical therapy expecting progress to be painful and discouraging. On the contrary, Dr. Jason Gulstrom used a gentle, yet effective individualized plan for each of us and set our minds at ease with his genuine, attentive, and caring nature. He strives for his patient’s success and a better quality of life for them (something that we regained because of him). My husband was a textbook rotator cuff injury and recovery, however, my case gave him more of a challenge. I saw him for my hip and rotator cuff. He (Dr. Jason Gulstrom) never gave up and we have both gotten back to accomplishing tasks that we couldn’t do before our treatments. We would absolutely go back to him for future therapy, and we have recommended him to our family and friends. Thank you, Dr. Jason, for your help.”
